Student life guide

We support students to have a fulfilling student life.

Notes on student life

As university students, your scope of activities will expand, and you will meet and interact with various people. To have a fulfilling student life, it is important to be considerate of others and to take responsibility for your own actions. To avoid becoming a victim or perpetrator, have prior knowledge about troubles and avoid unnecessary troubles.

(1) Solicitation by cults or radical groups

The existence of religious groups and others that disguise themselves as "circles" to recruit students on and off-campus is becoming a social issue. Recently, there have been solicitations using SNS.

(2) Fraudulent businesses

Problems with pyramid schemes and "mobile planners" are spreading among younger generations. Many victims are recruited by friends or circle members. It can lead not only to financial harm but also to the breakdown of personal relationships and trust.

(3) Theft and Loss Problems

There have been reports of people having their valuables stolen when they leave their luggage unattended on campus. Be careful to keep your cash and valuables with you at all times, or keep them where you can see them. There have also been reports of thefts in club rooms and dormitories. Make sure to lock your door properly when you are not at home, and always lock your room when it is unoccupied.

(4) Scams and Personal Information

Students, faculty, and staff at Science Tokyo have also been victims of scams. This kind of fraud affects all of us. There is a possibility that your personal information, which has been leaked without your knowledge, is being misused by scamming groups.
Once your information has been leaked, you cannot get it back. Always protect your personal information.
Most scams start with an e-mail, phone call, or SMS. If you feel even the slightest bit suspicious, be sure to talk to someone about it.

(5) Yami-Baito (Illegal part-time jobs)

Be suspicious of job postings that say “high-paying job,” “instant payment,” or “just pick up the paperwork.” Illegal job information is becoming more and more sophisticated and difficult to notice. Even if the job information on the public job posting is general, if you find anything even slightly odd, such as a request to contact them via an anonymous application, talk to someone about it as soon as possible.

(6) Alcohol

Acute alcohol intoxication can lead to fatal accidents. Do not encourage others to drink quickly. Drinking alcohol before the age of 20 is against the law. Forcing someone to drink may constitute “alcohol harassment.”
When occasions for drinking increase (before summer vacation, term start and end, year-end and New Year holidays, etc.), there tends to be a rise in trouble with local residents surrounding the university, as well as alcohol-related incidents (traffic accidents, acute alcohol poisoning, etc.). Since the Ookayama campus in particular is located in a residential area, please be sure to drink responsibly and without disturbing the local community.

(7) SNS Issues

What you casually post online may be an infringement of rights or even an illegal act. You may become a victim without realizing it. Once posted, there is no way to stop the spread of information — this is known as a digital tattoo. You could be the perpetrator or the victim. A thoughtless posting or the spreading of information could lead to a lifetime of regret.

(8) Drugs

Overdosing on illegal drugs, dangerous substances, and over-the-counter medications can destroy not only your life, but also the lives of your family and those close to you. You should never get involved with such drugs. The purchase, possession, use, or transfer of drugs that are regulated by law can result in severe criminal penalties. Science Tokyo may also impose strict disciplinary actions, including expulsion or the cancellation and return of scholarship benefits.
