2. [Science and Engineering] 2024 3rd Quarter Make-up Classes and Final Exams Schedule
Period: Friday, November 22, and Thursday, November 28 to Thursday, December 5
*The spare days for weekly classes are Friday, November 29 and Thursday, December 5.
*The Regular classes will be held from Saturday, November 23 to Wednesday, November 27.
The schedule will be updated in mid-November. Please make sure to confirm the details of the courses you have registered.
You must show your student ID card of Science Tokyo when you take the exams. Please receive it at the Student Division immediately if you have not.
You must not cheat in the exams. If a student is found to be cheating during an exam or other assignment, all exams and other assignments taken semester will be invalidated, and they will receive a zero or a failing grade for courses taken that semester, according to Article 7 of the Institute’s Rules on Student Disciplinary Action, which were amended in October, 2024.

3. [Science and Engineering] Distribution of 'Internal Application Form' [Graduate school]
'Internal Application Form' will be distributed from November 6(Wed).
Masters course students who would like to enroll in Doctoral Program in this coming April should be able to download the application form from the following URL. Applications should be submitted by December 2(Mon).

[Academy for Leadership]

(1) ToTAL/Open Programs:

Academy for Leadership (ToTAL) is offering more than 20 kinds of workshops annually for fostering and developing leadership and entrepreneurship mindset and skills. Regardless of whether you are in ToTAL or not, or whether you are an undergraduate or a graduate student, any student can apply to participate in these workshops.
In addition, graduate students can register for ToTAL's courses that consist of a combination of those workshops to acquire credits and GAs.

This class is designed to provide basic knowledge of “project management”, an essential skill for promoting work including research activities.

●Outline: Students will read books on leadership development or insights on future society following a unique book club style called "Active book Dialogue". In these classes, students grasp main idea of the book quickly and discuss ideas with other students intensively. It can be a language training for students who would like to improve Japanese/English skills.

[4-panel comic making workshop - storytelling with a “Beginning, Development, Turn, and Conclusion” structure]

●Outline: Through practical training of creation of a 4-panel comic, participants will learn the important points in creating an appealing story structure using “Beginning, Development, Turn, and Conclusion” (A Chinese story structuring technique). It is designed to help participants visually express logic, and can be useful when they create presentations materials. This class will be conducted in a group with students from Yokohama Specialized Training School of Arts.

●Outline: “Can you effectively convey what you want to say?” This directly impacts the outcomes of your efforts. Whether you are expressing your strengths in an interview or election, sharing research results, promoting a business or service, communicating a vision you want to realize, or conveying your thoughts at weddings or funerals, your ability to communicate matters. This is not just in situations where you have time to prepare but also in everyday conversations that demand spontaneity. You need communication skills to gain empathy and cooperation or support. We tend to think of communication as a talent or intuition, but it can be broken down into words and delivery and be trained. Through exercises and reflection, you can refine these elements.

[System thinking & leadership]

●Outline: Systems Thinking is a way of thinking that delves into the “connections” between the complex events we experience in reality, and improves our insight to create the results we really want to from a deeper level than simply dealing with problems. In this class, we will focus on Systems Thinking, touching on ideas such as “learning organizations” and “mental models”, and we will also explore the nature of leadership in this complex society.

[Future Foresight (series of 2 classes)]

●Date and time etc.: Monday, Dec. 9, 2024 and Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
●Facilitators: S. Matsuki, K. Fujimoto, Y. Kayauchi, K. Awata, The Japan Research Institute, Limited
●Outline: “Future Insight” has spread in Europe and the US as a way of thinking about future prediction and uncertainty management in the VUCA era. In Japan, “Future Foresight” is being used by private companies, government and local governments as a methodology for generating innovations together with “Design Thinking”. By using horizon scanning methods that capture the signs of uncertain change and forced thinking (brainstorming), we will proactively design futures 10-15 years from now that nobody has yet to be conceived. In this class, you will experientially learn how to use future insight as a thinking tool for this purpose.

[Design Practice and Material Study - Idea generation with your hands and brains]

●Outline: In this class, we will foster psychological safety to generate ideas through interactive art appreciation. From there, participants will spontaneously identify problems and create prototypes on the spot. Additionally, by experimenting with different material functions, you’ll create a second, brand-new prototype. You can experience a variety of approaches to design and idea generation.

[Social Implementation of Science and Technology: Deep-tech Startups x Legacy Industries]

●Guest speaker: T. Iwamoto, CEO, Polyuse Co., Ltd.
●Outline: Professionals who are developing new value and establishing it in society, such as in the academia, large enterprises, startups, financial institutions, legal professions, the media and government, will talk about the outline of their work, issues they face, and their way of thinking. Then, students will then hold a Q&A session and discussion on certain topics with those professionals.

-Course description: Introduction to Leadership envisions the classroom as a community in which all members can develop their knowledge and skills via engagement with issues and interaction with each other. By the end of the course, students will have critically explored some of the most common theories of leadership, reflected on their concepts and experiences, and begun to articulate what leadership means for them. Students will also learn to develop intercultural competence and effective communication skills throughout the course. This course will be recognized as an Entrepreneurship Course with no GA.

■TAL. C603 The Psychology of Leadership
-Language: English
-Class day/period: Fridays, Periods 1-2
-Venue: M-103, Ookayama campus
-Course description: This course aims to educate students on cutting-edge research in the psychology of leadership. Students will learn the 5R (Readying, Reflecting, Representing, Realizing, and Reporting) tools of Identity Leadership and analyze a real-life world leadership situation through this lens, which they will report on in a short presentation and discussion at a symposium to which we will invite a leadership psychologist researcher as an online keynote speaker. This course will be recognized as an Entrepreneurship Course with no GA.

The Super Smart Society Promotion Consortium will hold tours of participating institutions for students enrolled in the Super Smart Society Academy of Excellence or master's and doctoral students who wish to enroll, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the companies and research institutions participating in the consortium, deepening mutual understanding, and exchanging opinions with alumni of our university. Following the tours of five institutions in the first semester of 2024, two companies will be held in the second semester.

1. [Call for participants] Introduction to Design Thinking Workshop (Series of 3 classes)
Experience the “design thinking” methodology which can be called the global standard for creating innovation! Even if you know the term “design thinking”, this is the perfect workshop to experience it for the first time and learn how to actually put it into practice. We are calling for approximately 35 students for this workshop. (Undergraduates and course-registered students will be given priority.) If you take this program, it will be considered as part of the points required for credit when you take the Entrepreneur course of "ENT.V201 Group Work for Value Creation A" in the next academic year (AY2025).

■ENT.V602-02 Doctoral Introduction to Entrepreneurship 2 E
-Language: English

-Course description: This course provides fundamental skills and knowledge for launching new entrepreneurial projects. It covers the process from identifying customers to developing business models and products and explores the opportunities and challenges faced by modern entrepreneurs.
The course aims to deepen students' understanding of the fundamental theories and practical approaches of entrepreneurship, equipping them to form and develop unique ideas, whether as entrepreneurs or members of an organization.
