Science Tokyo’s predecessor universities — Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) — have ranked well in the Japan University Rankings 2025, released by UK-based education data institution Times Higher Education (THE) on April 3. The former Tokyo Tech ranked second overall, while the former TMDU ranked first in the education resources category.

The former Tokyo Tech ranked within the top 20 in all four categories — resources, engagement, outcomes, and environment — resulting in second place overall. The former TMDU ranked first in the education resources category, resulting in an overall ranking of 18th. Building on these achievements, Science Tokyo is committed to preserving the outstanding legacies of both institutions and striving for further excellence in the future.

Rankings overview

The Japan University Rankings, published by THE in collaboration with Benesse Corporation, aim to promote educational reform and globalization in Japanese universities. The rankings assess the educational strength of universities based on four key indicators — resources, engagement, outcomes, and environment. In the 2025 edition, a total of 257 universities were evaluated.

Ranking indicators

  • Resources: This pillar reflects the potential for providing high-quality education, based on data such as funding per student and faculty-to-student ratios.
  • Engagement: This pillar measures how well students’ educational expectations are met, based on surveys of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as reputation surveys of high school teachers.
  • Outcomes: This pillar evaluates how successful graduates are, based on reputation surveys conducted with employers and researchers.
  • Environment: This pillar assesses how international the educational environment is, using four types of data: the ratio of international students, the ratio of international faculty, the percentage of Japanese students studying abroad, and the proportion of courses taught in foreign languages.

Tokyo Tech and TMDU merged in October 2024 to form Science Tokyo.
