Science Tokyo wins Technical Award at BioInnoSense 2025 student contest

October 27, 2025

A team of Science Tokyo students has won the Technical Award at BioInnoSense 2025, a biosensor research and commercialization contest for students held between April and August of 2025.

Participants in the contest included students from four universities — the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Shibaura Institute of Technology, and Science Tokyo. Over four months, the participating students engaged in a wide range of activities, from planning and designing sensors to manufacturing them and creating business plans.

Following the demonstration of the actual biosensor devices developed by students on August 30, the final presentation session on the following day featured lively discussions and presentations by each team. Judging was conducted by a group of experts comprising consultants from industry and emeritus professors from universities, including the Institute. Evaluations covered both technical and business aspects. As a result, the Science Tokyo team was highly commended for their approach of setting their own challenges and tackling prototype development through trial and error, leading to the Technical Award.

The Science Tokyo, comprising twelve undergraduate students and four graduate-level students serving as mentors, included participants from the School of Science, School of Engineering, School of Life Science and Technology, School of Materials and Chemical Technology, and School of Environment and Society. The interdisciplinary team spanned academic years and fields, including four first-year students. This “all-Science Tokyo team” approach yielded results, with challenges undertaken by leveraging diverse backgrounds bearing fruit.

The Technical Award represents the culmination of the students' proactive learning and challenges, while also demonstrating the Institute's inspiring research environment and strengths in education. It further contributes to enhancing the Science Tokyo brand value. Macnica, Inc., an innovator in digital technology, provided full sponsorship for this contest, serving as an excellent example of industry-academia collaboration in cultivating future engineers.

The BioInnoSense contest will be held again next academic year, with plans to expand the number of participating universities. Science Tokyo will continue to actively pursue the development of globally competitive talent and the strengthening of research capabilities through such initiatives.
